Tornado in my town, yesterday!

Tornado destroys 10 homes, damages 27

Columbia City, Ind. (WANE) - It was an emotional day, Monday, as people in Columbia City cleaned up what a tornado left behind.
Just after 5:00 p.m. Sunday, a tornado touched down at the Countryside Mobile Home Park destroying ten homes and damaging 27 others.
Debra Hutter and her two children were inside their home when the twister hit. Emotions ran high as the Hutter family and many others returned to their homes to see the damage.
"I heard a boom and my daughter screamed. The living room window blew out right in front of us," said Hutter. "This is the first that I've seen it in the daylight. It's just devastating, it's our whole lives. This is the first time we've been through anything like this."
Authorities, volunteers and residents worked all day to clearing out the damage. The best news to come out of this devastating story is no one was seriously hurt.
"It's absolutely amazing," said Columbia City Police Chief, Mike Peterson. "I know one elderly lady was actually pinned in her trailer. The roof ripped off and collapsed and [she only had] minor injuries. It's amazing, it's a blessing."
Peterson said in his 14 years of service, he has never seen destruction of this magnitude.
"I've asked some of our veteran officers, they actually asked a lady who is 80 years old, and she doesn't remember an incident where Columbia City has experienced any damage of this nature," said Peterson.
Between the moments of sadness, disbelief and shock, people are left to wonder, 'what is the next step?'
"I really don't know," said Hutter. "I'm sure we'll be fine. It will just take a lot of time to get things back to normal."
Chief Peterson said his department's goal is to get things cleaned up as quickly and safely as possible. Officers expected to have streets and sidewalks clear and open by Tuesday.
